From the Historical Civilization Series depicting the past civilizations of China, Greece, and Egypt, Chan is among the most recognized motifs in the artistry of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne. Occasionaly applied to consols, side and tea tables, the Chan motif which tells the story of Chinese peasants bringing a sacred gift to the Emperor's child was most often seen on coffee tables. Here on this Chan coffee table the tale is retold in intricately carved, patinated bronze and pewter relief and adorned with hand painted, brightly colored enamels. The piece bares LaVernes sought after signature patina, the result of chemical reactions that occured when the bronze and pewter works were buried in a propriatory blend of soils kept in the basement of their workroom. This treatment, completely unique to their work, resulted in the rich, aged patina that defines the art of Philip and Kelvin LaVerne.
The Chan coffee table is signed on the lower front and can be found in our New York City Showroom.
